Not everyone aspires to manage a large team, and many workers lose interest in their jobs once they lose touch with the actual, hands-on work they used to do.
They go on to describe one of the worst effects of cultures that are low on motivation and managed by a team that believes in external (indirect) motivation. They call it the Cobra Effect, and it’s a classic (and hilarious) example of incenting the wrong thing.
The first signal that something is wrong will be a feeling that you’ve often had but may not trust. Call it a hunch, a niggling suspicion, sinking feeling, gut reaction, or its technical term: cognitive dissonance.

In the 1950s, we imagined a future where robots and machines did all the work for us; we would only need to push a few buttons every few minutes, and watch as tasks accomplished themselves. We’re not quite there yet, but we certainly can accomplish a tremendous amount of work by pushing a few buttons.

Scheduling meetings with a number of participants can be maddening. Someone proposes several dates and participants chime in as the email correspondence multiplies with “reply all.” Emails cross, people change their availability, and it turns into a logistical nightmare for the hapless organizer.
